The magic of a pristine sky 🤩
The Milky Way arches over our Very Large Telescope, set under a colourful sky. This so-called airglow is extremely faint and only noticeable in the darkest regions, such as the Atacama Desert in #Chile. So, preserving pristine skies not only enables cutting-edge research, but it also allows photographers to capture the magic of a perfectly dark night.

@penryu for me, I have a particular turn on 101, just past Gaviota Beach, which is where Southern California ends and central California starts. The Bay Area/Central California border is at Gilroy. The Bay Area/Northern California border is just north of Ukiah. And from there it just keeps going until Oregon.

@evan I'm with you. But despite the "Northern" and "Southern" monikers, this rivalry seems to have very little to do with geography.

@penryu oh, I'm sure they are authentic. But from the other direction, they seem laughable. For a Southern Californian, it would be nuts for SoCal to start in San Jose. That's practically in San Francisco! And for a Northern Californian, by the time you get to Ventura, you're *almost* in Los Angeles. It's right there.

@evan Interesting. Shortly after moving to the South Bay, a coworker declared that no one east of Tracy deserved a vote. Would you say that yours is a counterpoint to his assertion?

@evan These are the most common _serious_ options OTHER native Californians have given me for this legendary divider.
(Foolish me thought Sacramento would be a natural divider, but alas, I was laughed out of the boutique shop.)
What would you consider more serious (if not canonical) locations?
