i really would like proper screensavers back.

@mntmn still salty about kde removing them
@whitequark @mntmn I didn't use KDE with kwin_wayland, so XScreenSaver was still an option.
Now, without KDE, I'm using XScreenSaver.

@mntmn do screensavers have an advantage over dpms off, other than looking absolutely stunning?
@wolf480pl @mntmn I keep all outputs always on, because it also disables audio on my HDMI monitor.

i really would like proper screensavers back. we can see in certain edge cases that burn-in is still a problem with TFTs (and i guess OLEDs), it's just not widely known anymore
@mntmn TFT LCD “burn in” is reversible, AFAIK. My phone does that frequently and it can be fixed by letting the screen/device to cool down.

@wolf480pl @mntmn And another monitor needs ~20 minutes to reach full backlight brightness, so I don't want to turn it off when I'm expecting I'll need it soon.

@mntmn one of the few things I will miss once my desktop is off Xorg in a Debian release or so is XScreensaver.
look, I don't even think it has the most practical use for me on my display, I just think it's neat
Also have absolutely had a non-OLED LED monitor burn in.

@jwo cool down literally, as in low temperature?

@mntmn Yep. This screen doesn't like heat (mostly from the smartphone electronics) and shows really ugly persistence when I have a non-moving image (UI etc.) on it, especially when it's hot.

@mntmn they are coming back https://www.jwz.org/blog/2025/07/xscreensaver-6-12/
but screen blank helps with the burn in problem already a good bit and some OLEDs seem to come with a screenblank feature in firmware it seems
