“It started after an attack by Hamas that killed more than 1,000 Israelis, while 240 people were taken captive.

What followed has been anything but a measured response by Israel. Instead it’s been widely seen as an attempt to annihilate Gaza.

“More than 28,000 of those killed were women and girls, and 16,000 were minors. That’s 2 percent of Gaza’s children. Thousands of them lost one or both parents. Entire families have been wiped out.

“Over the past 24 months, Israeli attacks have killed more than 67,000 Palestinians. That’s one in every 33 people, or 3 percent of the population. Gaza’s Ministry of Health tracks the deaths of people brought to hospitals. The real number of those killed, many buried under rubble, is likely much higher, according to independent studies.

“People in Gaza are also starving. So far, 459 have died of malnutrition, including 154 children. The UN has declared famine in Gaza City, and every other corner of the territory is facing a food emergency.

More than 2,000 people have been shot dead at aid distribution sites, and thousands more have been wounded.

Infrastructure is gone. Most wells have been destroyed, so people are being forced to drink salty, unpotable water.

“At least 169,000 people have been wounded. That’s one in every 12 people in Gaza. Many have been maimed. Between 3,000 and 4,000 children have had one or more limbs amputated, while doctors struggled with limited supplies of anaesthesia, or none at all.

Gaza’s hospitals are barely standing. The Israeli military has attacked nearly every hospital and clinic, killing many healthcare workers.

“Today, Gaza is a wasteland. Nearly half a million homes have been destroyed or damaged, and most residential and commercial buildings have been flattened. That means tons of rubble littered with unexploded munitions adding up to billions of dollars in damage.

Since October 2023, Israel has hit Gaza with relentless attacks from land, sea and air. It has dropped more than 100,000 tonnes of explosives, which threaten to cause a long-term environmental disaster.

And, according to ACLED, which tracks wars, there have been more than 22,000 political violence events in this small strip of land, making Gaza the most dangerous place in the world.”
