@jwz I would happily pay the Foundation IFF they do those things you list. I want my browser to be my tool, not someone else's. I never mind paying for things of value. But I *won't* pay for things which victimize me to enrich someone else.

LLMs are the 3D movies of tech. A novelty. It *seems* cool, but in truth it's a *dead end.* Save your reputation. Save your *MONEY!* Get off the bandwagon before it sails off the cliff.

@jwz The only thing I would add to that list is to provide industry leading developer tools built in to the browser that allow developers to build the most robust, performant, beautiful and standards compliant web apps.

I might sound a bit underducated on this, but I also wish they could make the Gecko rendering engine more independently usable. It pisses me off that every new browser is based on Chromium. imo if we make the rendering engine more popular, it will get way more attention and people jumping in to fix issues lying around for years because of lack of staff. -

Quest'anno niente vacanze estive nazional-popolari al mare per me e famiglia.
Ormai sono due o tre anni che non proviamo più alcun desiderio né soddisfazione per questo tipo di vacanza, anzi. Forse è complice il fatto che cambiamo sempre destinazione e non ci siamo affezionati a nessun luogo in particolare. E se non hai un affetto personale che ti lega a certi luoghi e a certe compagnie, e che ti fa ignorare certi dettagli meno piacevoli, finisci invece per notarli tutti.
Quindi basta sabbia tra le dita dei piedi, quest'anno la truppa si sposta a Vienna, per 4 giorni e 3 sole notti di turismo fai da te.

@grabbi_it ti assicuro che il settore del fast food ha un impatto ambientale molto più devastante rispetto al settore dell’AI che ha comunque un impatto non trascurabile. Ma alla gente piace mangiare hamburger scadenti e spegnere il cervello per farsi fare i compiti da un software, quindi forse la parte più rilevante del problema che sollevi è quella culturale/antropologica e non quella tecnologica…

Software principles that last don't come from architects in glass offices. They come from practitioners who noticed what kept working.
These principles arose from doing the work. They did not descend from on high from those far removed from the work.
This, I feel is the most fundamental truth about doing work: those without dirty hands are wrong. Doing something makes you right.

Both implementations of democracy and the ideal are constantly under threat. Now more than any time in my lifetime.
The nature of #freesoftware and #opensource is to be against closed, proprietary systems. Tools for individuals. It has ALWAYS been a resistance to closed, proprietary systems.
In that regard, it echoes more #volunteerism than #democracy. That it is a tool democracy can and should use should not be conflated, imho.
