This is all too true with respect to filesystems, because graduate students only know Python, and within Python they only know how to do string substitution, open, read, and close. (Plus whatever ML library is currently au courant.) Seek? Never heard of it. Databases? That's a different research group.

You have not run a real filesystem until you've tried to move or back up a directory tree like /corpusname/v3/test1/param1=%f,param2=%d,param3=%f,filter=%s/s/l/u/slugword/%05d.{jpg,json}.
