@FandaSin @haubles I had the same thought. I just finished reading a book about the (American) Civil War. The Southerners' argument for slavery was that they couldn't maintain their economy without slave labor. They thought the UK and maybe France would support them (though slavery was banned there) because those countries needed the cotton that the South exported. One prominent Southerner popularized the slogan "Cotton is King."
