@hackwimbledon ... it felt weird to sit in DJ's "spot" at the front, and be doing the event hosting (rather than being a heckler!), but it was great to have the core group back together. It is clear there's a desire to keep our #maker group together, sharing knowledge, ideas, and solutions with one another. Wimbletech - our host space and spiritual home - continues to be a very generous and welcoming environment.

Today I built storage for three bikes to hang vertically near the garage door. It's basically a single high shelf, secured to the wall with diagonal supports. The three bike hooks screw in to the underside of the shelf.I'll add skateboard storage in the space between the bikes.#maker

I'm really hoping for Fediverse help here.I have a 14 year old niece. She's incredibly smart and extremely motivated when it comes to engineering things.I want to get her some electronics stuff, like an Arduino kit, but maybe something with wearables, etc. to make it more relevant to her than just a breadboard. She'll also need some books on electronics, since she doesn't have the background in that.Sadly, some limitations:- I can't help her. Her mother won't let my wife or I talk to her. This gift itself will have to be given through a third party.- She has a learning disability around reading- likely dyslexia, and so we need material that's easy to read- Her English is not amazing, especially because of the learning disability. So I'm looking for a kit with a ton of instructional material. Programming, electronics, breadboard, the whole kit and kaboodle. If you have ideas, please share, and boost!#Maker #Arduino #Wearables #FediHelp #Electronics

Maybe we need to update #RTFM. Actual manuals are rare beasts these days. You’re more likely to find the information you need online, whether it’s in the form of PDF datasheets, forum posts or Git gists. It should really be RTFAI, in which the AI isn’t what you think but stands for ‘Available Information’. But that’s a bit of a mouthful, so perhaps just RTFI. Or we could just say ‘Read’, followed (if you feel strongly about it) by FFS. RFFS?#tech #technology #maker #computer #computing
