Finally!
Danish Arctic Command announces that two C-130 Hercules planes have landed in the municipalities of Nuuk, and Kangerlussuaq in Greenland with international forces in preparation for large international "exercises".
The population of Greenland has been told to expect a "considerable military presence" consisting of international Air, Navy, Army, and Special Forces.
From what I hear, four NATO countries are involved in today's operation, including our Norwegians friends.

A prudent move since (as Trump pointed out) the threat to Greenland from countries like Russia and China is so serious that it would warrant the US taking ownership.
One wonders why Denmark and NATO were not aware of this threat before. It's clearly necessary to defend it from those countries.
(and any other that don't belong and could attempt to get a foothold there)
Russia struggles to supply it's troops 200km from it's borders.
What makes you think they could supply an invasion force 2,000km away with no friendly airspace and contested sea routes whilst the US would have NATO allies providing airspace, sea routes and Arctic warfare forces.
The USA is far more likely to lose it's base in Greenland because of the actions of Trump rather than the actions of Putin or Xi

Just for the drama oder so.. -
@randahl Why explain the obvious and not just enjoy the subtle irony 🙄
@sibrosan @randahl given the stupidity of MAGA supporter or bots, I'm very suspicious nowadays. Really couldn't catch the irony at all.
I'm glad it was though. But in the end, there are MASSIVE interest for Russia in the US invading Greenland.
Breaking or diverting energy/resource from NATO, or weakening them, and reinforce the west part so they can invade the east through Ukraine with less help. We're surrounded by psychopathic killer idiots with atomic powers. What a sad state.
The US senate/congress should impeach that crazy lunatic now, and if not, the military should protect the constitution and force him and his goon out of power.
The World shouldn't have to deal with this mess, it is very messy already.
-
@randahl Germany is only sending a 13-people advance party 🙂 . How embarrassing ....
@masek @randahl
All this is a (on purpose) low key, more diplomatic gesture anyway, by now.
Don't think it is to prepare really a specific larger force of each country, not only considering the reality of the Greenland landscape/weatherconditions.
No one dares to think of a "military confrontation"or show off of (former) NATO allies.Yet, here we are.🤪 😱

Its kind of like the Taiwan situation. You cannot "win" a war with a superpower, but you can make it so costly that they may just walk away...

@randahl im Handelsblatt stand heute, dass die dt. Bundeswehr einen Erkundungstrupp hingeschickt hat, der militärische Unterstützung für Grönland prüft, auch auf See, also D ist mit im Boot. @sibrosan because Trump is lying. There is no immediate threat from other countries. We have expensive surveillance to prove it.
@randahl if there’s no immediate threat it doesn’t mean that there’s no threat at all. China is known for its slow, but well planned years before ago actions, mostly trough economy, trade, science cooperation, which are aimed at increasing its influence in the region (https://www.fpri.org/article/2023/08/chinas-global-island-hopping-strategy/ @sibrosan). Most likely, Trump is exerting pressure to force Greenland to strengthen its ties with the EU or the US through economic deals and military agreements.

@randahl I keep hearing Canada is involved somehow in some sources but I'm not finding what we're doing 🤔
Which is kind of pathetic. We should be sending troops and equipment.
-
@randahl Hardware: can do 🙂. It is a pity that we got rid of the cold war stocks. We once had 3.000 MBTs. That stock could have Ukraine supplied for years.
I refer more to the ability to deploy troops and keep them in the field.
The tank brigade in Lithuania (not Estonia, sorry!) was agreed upon in 2022. The 45th tank brigade is currently expected to be ready in 2027.
P.S. I served in 1985 in 6th Tank Grenadiers division which was paired with the danish Jutland division. Back at that time, German soldiers in Denmark still had to expect to be chased away by Danish farmers during exercises.

@randahl fight back with money - dump American products like Canada
That's the only language they understand

@grootinside yes. And nobody talks about the vulnerability of arctic ecosystems ... it's a difference between a short exercise and large military groups staying. @masek @randahl

The craziness is of course staggering, since the USA is also a NATO partner, article 4 means we would be able to call upon them if they invade this territory themselves.
B.t.w. where do they manufacture those Hercules planes?

@randahl Canada's people are with you Greenland. But we won't send troops to support you until Carney has worked out which way is up for his elbows.

@javensbukan @randahl We have a presence there, but just because we are there doesn't mean that we would always be part of the exercises. I don't think this is the "where are the elbows Carney" moment a lot of arm chair generals are making at the moment. From this armchair general, I think its a nothing-burger.
-
@tdp_org has France confirmed their participation today?
@randahl Yeah, I heard it on World Service news this morning, Oooh, now I started replying, I see a link has been posted below 👍🏻
