I hiked a large sand dune for the first time yesterday. What a unique experience! Quite a slog, hiking straight up the side to reach the ridge. A surprise with the challenge of walking the ridge— didn’t expect it to be so sharp. The drop-off on each side looked steeper/scarier than it actually was. A fun time! Bruneau Sand Dunes (Idaho)— 470 feet (143m) base-to-peak elevation change. #MountainMonday #hiking #nature

This interesting pattern of mini “landslides” of sand was prevalent along the ridge of the sand dune that I hiked earlier this week. This is a view from the ridge of the dune looking straight down the steep incline. “Streams” of sand would begin flowing down the slope once a hiker disturbed the sand while walking on the ridge. #TextureTuesday #nature #photography

As I head home from Idaho today, I am reflecting on the wonderful visit I had with my family members. While much of the time was spent visiting in their house, several of us also had fun outside adventures together, building new memories. The hike on this dune will remain a standout of the trip, enjoying a special geological feature. See how my head is down, focusing on footing on the ridge. #FootpathFriday #hiking #nature

@cstross It's weird to me how the UK insists that its constituent parts are "countries" not provinces. Similar to how the USA insists its provinces are actually "states".
Otherwise, this whole situation is pretty similar for most countries. One big province where most of the people live, especially the rich people, that bullies everyone else: Ontario, Ile de France, CDMX, Tokyo. A rural province with a much smaller population that often feels bullied (often this is where you find separatist movements and/or anti-immigrant movements). And then there's the problem child that just doesn't fit in: Quebec, French Guiana, Norfolk Island, Puerto Rico, Xinjiang...
