Bondi's extortionary demand for the Minnesota voter rolls is curious.

You are correct in how elections legally work but there are no checks and balances anymore. Trump’s fascist gestapo will see to that. All of us non-Americans hope that he fails but since the Republicans always fall in line, and he controls the military, who, who is going to stop him.@OilersOrganGuy @bflipp @distractal Nonetheless, I think understanding how things work and what the law is is useful.
Perhaps Trump doesn’t care. But the rest of us should still care.

@mattblaze
We know why they want the info, but demanding it in a ransom note on DoJ letterhead was, uh, kind of an unforced error. Whatever large feline that bites asses is going to make an appearance.@oldhaapi I actually don’t know why they want this. I can speculate, but none of the obvious explanations make complete sense.

They want it to go door to door or by social media to every single voter to intimidate and threaten their lives if they vote against Republicans.
If that doesn't work, they will fight and murder people to ensure the election is not certified.
Failing that, they will start wars to ensure they remain in control.
Fascism in a nutshell.

@bflipp @distractal Because it DOES make a big difference. Elections are run by states, not the federal government. The executive branch has virtually no role in election operations. While it’s certainly true that the Trump administration has overstepped its authority in many ways, attempting to usurp state control over elections goes well beyond anything they’ve attempted or even discussed. It would represent a significant attack on the structure of federalism.
@mattblaze @bflipp @distractal I'm not trying to be combative, but as an election layperson (merely a user) I'd really like to understand how you'd categorize the difference between murdering people and lying about it in full public view, as well as abolishing agencies like USAID (etc etc); and exerting violent control over elections (or people trying to vote in elections), perhaps with tacit or overt support from rightwing state governments. And considering that SCOTUS is fully corrupt.

@autonomousapps @bflipp @distractal The Minneapolis ICE brutality is horrific, but the federal government does have authority to enforce immigration laws. So their being there isn’t a priori illegitimate or unconstitutional in and of itself. But taking over the administration of elections from the state would be. The executive has no constitutional authority or role there.

@mattblaze
If they can claim that they have "all the data", then they can commence lying about it, either after the elections, or challenging voters prior to elections to intimidate or fully disenfranchise them. -

Only a few fields aren’t. See the link in my post for details.

Sleeping on it. Have a good night!
Having worked with redacted data, I'm not so sure it's always hidden nowadays.
Safer to not release files at all.

@mattblaze @bflipp @distractal Ok, I do take your point. I don't think the federal government will attempt to literally control elections (seems like too much trouble). But I do think past patterns will continue and amplify, and increasingly violent suppression is in our future

Sufficient? It might also advance a court argument to have more released. It's a step in a process. I dunno. I just know what motivates a fascist.

@autonomousapps @bflipp @distractal I agree. But the fact that the administration is doing terrible things doesn’t mean that every other terrible thing they might want to do is equally likely or possible.
