Big Tech is at it again.
Some of you might have seen this already. Google has announced a new policy for Android app developers, which would require them to seek Google’s permission if they want to distribute their apps outside of the Google Play Store (on their own website or on alternative app stores). This would entail:
1) agreeing to their terms and conditions
2) paying a fee
3) uploading a government IDWhich is wrong on so many levels. Nobody should be forced to register with Google if they don’t want to use their services.
In doing so they would be extending their gatekeeping (tentacles) into distribution channels where they’re just not a legitimate authority.
At Vivaldi, we believe you have the right to run whatever software you want on a device you own. That’s why we’ve co-signed this open letter, together with other 53 organisations, requesting Google to back off on the proposed policy before it enters into force.
(Plus, they have have a pretty cool logo 😄)

But the post isn't about the signatory I clicked the button on. But the Mastodon buttons all post to different Mastodon servers. What's going on?

@Vivaldi I definitely do not want apple products and now I don't want android products. Is there a linux phone?
Was just reading through the thread, I may be able to offer a suggestion. There are Linux phones but the reliability is questionable. If you're interested in an alternative you could look at GrapheneOS as an option. Only runs on Pixel for now, next year some Motorola as well. But Android developer ID isn't an issue with GrapheneOS.

Selective Ironing Adds Designs To 3D Prints
While working on a project that involved super-thin prints, [Julius Curt] came up with selective ironing, a way to put designs on the top surface of a print without adding any height.
For those unfamiliar, ironing is a technique in filament-based 3D printing that uses the extruder to smooth out top surfaces after printing them. The hot nozzle makes additional passes across a top surface, extruding a tiny amount in the process, which smooths out imperfections and leaves a much cleaner surface. Selective ironing is nearly the same process, but applied only in a certain pattern instead of across an entire surface.
Selective Ironing can create patterns by defining the design in CAD, and using a post-processing script.
While conceptually simple, actually making it work was harder than expected. [Julius] settled on using a mixture of computer-aided design (CAD) work to define the pattern, combined with a post-processing script. More specifically, one models the desired pattern into the object in CAD as a one-layer-tall feature. The script then removes that layer from the model while applying the modified ironing pattern in its place. In this way, one can define the pattern in CAD without actually adding any height to the printed object. You can see it in action in the video, embedded below.We’ve seen some interesting experiments in ironing 3D prints, including non-planar ironing and doing away with the ironing setting altogether by carefully tuning slicer settings so it is not needed. Selective Ironing is another creative angle, and we can imagine it being used to embed a logo or part number as easily as a pattern.
