At another store, I had an entire conversation in French about a product I was looking for. At the end, I said, "merci," and he said, "you're welcome. Are you from England?"
Erm, what?

When we're anywhere else in the world, and people ask where we're from, we say Montreal, and they say, "oh, Montreal!" When we're in Montreal, people ask where we're from, and look very confused if we answer that we're from here. It doesn't matter how many years we've lived here. We'll never be considered "from" here. But I don't care, it's what I've started saying anyway.

Not the same thing as you as we were not born in Canada, but after almost 25 years it’s exhausting, and I’m polite. 🙃

@adelinej @dillyd my mother in law told me of some neighbor who was surprised to know that a woman had been buried in the local cemetery, since she was from *elsewhere* (one or two villages away)

that woman had married somebody from that village and had spent all of her married life there.
