I sincerely believe Jack Dorsey created Bluesky to prevent the widespread adoption of ActivityPub by funding a replacement protocol that would serve the interests of big corps like Twitter rather than individuals. I believe what we see above is Dorsey's original plan working.

The blockchain-like elements of ATProto don't *exactly* prevent you from creating a second "federated" bluesky stack, but they do mean you practically have to take venture funding to do it.
(The fact blacksky was able to do this as an independent community is cool, but is I think kind of a fluke caused by the nature of Black Twitter, a fluke other communities may not be able to replicate; I have doubts northsky will get off the ground without exploding. Even Blacksky isn't quite off ground yet)

(The fact Gander Socials' startup was $1 million in "equity crowdfunding" rather than a traditional soul-sell to a VC firm means maybe I'm being overly negative about it. But also maybe there are more traditional fundraising deals either to come or not yet publicly announced.)

@mcc i wonder if we could trick investors to put millions of dollars into fedi instances hosted by regular catgirls if we just used more corporatey marketing copy :P

@mcc Exactly... If only there was a W3C standard that allows different social networks to federate with each other. :)

@mcc now that “pivot from nonprofit to for-profit” is an established business principle for success, presumably they will steal all the “equity” from the crowdfunders and make a “canadian version” of that “innovation” too
(this is probably extremely unfair but, like, the people that I am being unfair to here are the ones with the burden of proof at this point)

@glyph Gander does not anywhere claim to be a nonprofit and, in fact, looking in their offering document I find they are a normal British Columbia corporation.
I did find this while poking around, which is a *very* weird comment for software apparently based on Bluesky.
