@futurebird Interesting example of how people interpret stuff... I feel like they should have left the words off, the numbers were clear until the words unnecessarily complicated it.

Does 1 means "lowest temperature because its the lowest number," or does it mean "highest temperature because you have the compressor set to the minimuim?"
If anything, you should get rid of the numbers and replace them with two words: 'Cold" and "Not"

@futurebird in case of a physical knob to turn: depending on which numer comes right after "off": this is the warmest. At the other side of the scale it is "coldest".
"Min" being "the minimum change of temperature compared to initial temperature/room temperature".
@Aubrieta @futurebird I had an apartment with a thermostat that didn’t work like this. It went 0-10 *and then fan*, so my first January living there i inadvertently had the heat turned off the entire time 😭

@futurebird 10, since i imagine the design communicates the strength of the coldness, although it would be nice to add more design elements that would hint at the intensity, like maybe a blue/black line near the dial that becomes more pronounced or wider at the end, or a snowflake, or something like that

@futurebird for the Diplomat model, the temperature settings are just points for negotiation. Under normal circumstances you will probably get a 5, whatever setting you choose.

@futurebird this is why I always keep appliance manuals. Because what I assume and what the manufacturer means can be quite different.

Just terrible labels.One way you can sometimes tell is when turning the dial if you hear a click and then the compressor kicks on. What ever way you were turning it makes it colder.
At least on one fridge I've seen, they labeled it colder warmer iirc. That was definitely more useful.
Certainly ambiguous but i guess they expect you to know intuitively that min max refer to amount of cooling rather than the temperature.

@rysiek @futurebird Even if calibration is imperfect it's still clearly usable. Unlike the ambiguous min/max (temp or cooling power???)

@futurebird They should name them like RVs are named (in itself, absurd): Prowler, Rascal, Rambler, Cougar, Bounder. Maybe Despair-o-matic, Screaming Beagle Icebox, FoodCrypt?

@futurebird Honest to God, it makes no sense whatsoever, and I just adjust it until I get what I want, and ignore meaning altogether. I think *1* means colder. That's where I start. But I don't *know* that. And in the end, I just want my beers to be hella cold, and I fiddle until I get that.

As a software engineer and engineering manager, I am mildly concerned for my employability in the future. However, I've had a good career, with much more luck than I deserve. People in my profession have been notably pampered and paid extremely well. As automation turns its Sauron-like eye to my own industry, it's hard to say with a straight face that we have been unfairly treated. I also think that there are, and will be for the foreseeable future, a lot of options for people who like to code.

I think that using LLMs to create text, images, video or code is an empowering technology for a lot of people. I think especially with code, it gives people who don't code and who've never had control over their computing experience more agency in their life and work. I think that's a net positive result.

I generally don't like LLM-generated images or video. I mostly don't like LLM-generated text -- it's usually flat, wordy, and full of business jargon. I don't use LLMs for either of these things.
