Edit: that above is in the official android client. On the web it says "This post cannot be displayed as the original author does not allow it to be quoted."

I mean, I think that a quote should be equivalent to "link + preview". If the post is accessible/public/federation is working, the preview should work

If the preview isn't working, it should at least gracefulky degrade to a link (and if the author didn't mean this content to be read, it should then be non-public).

@BrianSmith950 @Edent the above post that I linked, seems to argue that it wasn't... Because the fediverse already had quotes, and adding a separate permission systems to control quote seems to have just made interop difficult, without substantial benefits.

OTOH other people are arguing that the spec is well-thought

@DamonHD @Edent yes, I *think* this is why. 4.5 isn't officially out yet, mastodon.social runs ahead of official releases. So nobody else has it yet unless they're doing the same.

@DamonHD @Edent actually I'm wrong (as @edent's test quote just proved to me). Mastodon 4.4 has support for *displaying* quotes, so everyone has that, it's just that only 4.5 will have the ability to actually *create* them so that's not everywhere yet. Sorry for confusing things.
