@Paradox most (but not all) kettles I've seen have a wider spout than the opening on a tap
my grandad's is like that, and the lid uses some arcane mechanism, so it gets filled via the spout.
on the other hand, my mum's kettle has a really flat spout, and an easy to use lid (it's spring loaded and pops up with a button) so it gets used properly

I'm not saying it's the right way to do it, I'm saying if you're lazy it avoids several motions
