No Tools for You: A Century of Men Policing Women’s Tools

@avi2022@masto.ai @Tock@corteximplant.com @adafruit @jpaskaruk @kwayk42
1) Star Trek is a goddamn TV show. Gene Roddenberry had a giant blank space for post-capitalism through the "energy economy" of TOS-DS9 because he had no answers on how to get from there to the other side (at least. Seems Discovery, Starfleet Acad. are on shaky ground with even that.) Visionaries cannot predict bumps in the road, even if it seems they know the way.
2) LLMs are not Artificial Intelligence. As much as a Video Game isn't a parallel universe. Yet people still imbue LLMs with sci-fi tropes like sentience, machine rights, and even Godhood when no proof of any of the sort is evident.
3) Posing "homework" to people who are being oppressed by AI is kind of a dick move; "help me to understand" is just "answer my questions if you want to continue arguing with me" under a different lampshade. My ass is still being asked to get up and turn the damn light on when you're right there.
So, dunk with "you're wrong" if you must. It's the last you'll hear from me.
@sefr @adafruit @jpaskaruk @kwayk42 oh theres actually those who think games and fiction are parallel universes
-someone who ran into such beings
-
@mcc not to mention they harassed several people and revealed private personal info (mine) recently. all in "defense" of anyone critical of their ai usage.
-
@tom_verbeure Oh boy, I thought Adafruit was the parent corporation to the Raspberry Pi company. I don't know how that got in my head. 😅
-
@adafruit Fedi is just AI-phobic and sometimes hateful a la Twitter... I really doubt this is sexism.
@golemwire @adafruit ‘AI-phobic’ is a *wild* way to describe it, but yeah like, I can pretty much guarantee everyone complaining about Adafruit doing this are also complaining about every other company engaging in slop, not calling guys ‘savvy early adopters’.
Also: The ‘write up’ was a paragraph attributed to Phillip Torrone, and then tooted on the generic adafruit accounted, so yeah, can't say I follow that one at all.
-
@adafruit out of curiosity, Phillip (and yes, this post is credited to Phillip Torrone), is there a reason this toot doesn't actually name the "tool" she used?
-
@adafruit hi ptorrone! are you tired of ban-evading and harassing people yet?
@whitequark lol from the tone and the level of unhingedness of these posts that’s exactly the vibe I got, too. I thought surely they can’t both be like this.

@jaseg @whitequark the blog post makes it pretty clear it's ptorrone...
"When Limor Fried uses one to..."
Yeah, it's ptorrone.
Unhinged as usual.

No Tools for You: A Century of Men Policing Women’s Tools
In 1925 a doctor said vacuum cleaners will make women lazy. In 2026 mastodon dudes said the same thing (and worse) about a woman engineer using a tool to make a CAD part.

@adafruit lmao I knew you fools weren't worth it when you had projects like that "digital frame to display NFTs" and you've never once given me a reason to reconsider
-
@adafruit Cue the "look at all the ABUSE we're getting!" (Pearl clutch, gasping wrist across the forehead) "Looks like its time to close our Mastodon account and go someplace safer (whiter) where AI is welcome!"
> Looks like its time to close our Mastodon account and go someplace safer (whiter)
Wow, racist much?
-
@glassresistor He called out Adafruit for using AI and for selling out to an investment company. The first one is true, they just posted about this again a few hours ago. The second one was the mistake, because that was Arduino and not Adafruit.

@adafruit hi I'm a queer woman and I think AI and this post both suck

@eniko Hm. Yeah I feel like the hate is more about that the tool is a bad tool in and of itself and not that the tool is making the user lazy? I don’t like that they switched the frame.
-
@adafruit@fosstodon.org Have you lost your fucking minds?

@adafruit this post is genuinely embarrassing as hell I'm sorry. Signed, a woman

Wow. First, thank you, @adafruit , for all you do for the #STEAM community and those of us who just want to tinker, learn, and create.
It looks to me like you had an idea and used AI tools to do some of the leg work to get it done. And that you checked the work before “shipping it”. That is a perfectly legitimate use of AI.
It also sounds like you were tinkering and learning about the tools as you went, too. That is the spirit of creativity.
Keep up the good work!
@inaction_figure @adafruit cool fucking alt adafruit

@avi_2022 there was no racism in this reply, only sarcasm.

@adafruit Well, I know who I'm not buying components from again. This is really disgusting and weird LLM apologia that completely misunderstands the actual struggle of disrespect and abuse that women go through in labour.
-
@adafruit amusingly though: @cstross blocked me a couple years ago, because he was (if I recall correctly, can't be arsed to dig up the toot but it's back there somewhere) either boosting or else posting AI slop images and laughing at how bad they were. I had been an avid follower, but I expressed my surprise that he, an author no less, would be playing with the plagiarism machine in public.
As much as I tend to agree with the mob that using this planet killer was a terrible idea that you should be ashamed about, rather than what you're doing right here, Stross seems like he's mostly concerned with building up some sort of "profile" on here, and does not like to have his hypocrisy pointed out.
I think there are going to be some incredible strides made in education with this tech, but not until these psychopaths are devoured by angry street mobs and we start using it judiciously and without murdering towns and communities.
People in America have brown tap water so you could avoid work of which you are perfectly capable. You didn't need the help. There's no justifying it. Brown tap water.
@jpaskaruk stross doesn't need to build a profile; he has a profile high and large enough, that he blocks drive-by admonishments and aggressive replies to third parties just to keep his feed readable. this is not new.
(and before you ask, i was blocked by him because of the latter; there's no need to imagine nefarious reasons for his actions.)
