Signal still requires a phone number.
Needed for registration, but it's also the account handle. I.e. if users lose access to the phone number, somebody else could kill their account by creating a new one on that phone number.
Signal allows, however, to hide the phone number now. That's better than before, as it makes life harder for stalkers. But it's still bad. And it's on AWS. And it does not run without Android/iOS 😠
