To the people using screen readers: is a useless image description worse than none at all?

To the people using screen readers: is a useless image description worse than none at all? Useless as in describing a screenshot of some text "some text about something" instead of quoting it, or just "image" or so.
Boosts welcome.

@posiputt I don't use a screen reader so I'm not going to vote in the poll, but I DO rely heavily on alt text, partially because of poor connection leading to media not loading, and at least in my case a coarse generic text is still better than nothing, especially if it still gives me enough of an idea of what I can find (in combination with the post text) to bookmark the post to check it out later when the media loads.
