When I updated my iPhone, I was amused that the first couple of minutes were "verifying update". Ummm, you didn't verify it before pushing it? -

I know what that does, though. the phone checks if the downloaded version didn't get corrupted on the way in. If that happens and there is no check on it, your phone might get bricked and then it's a paper weight.
