Recently, a group of MEPs wrote a letter to the EC about promoting Europe-based social networks. I think Mastodon is already primed for this role, we just need more active users (from institutions and politicians as well).
ps: by the way, it's a pleasure to meet a colleague (I work as an IT consultant for the JRC 😉)
