  • I'm feeling FOMO for SFSCON this week and TPAC next week.

One thing about being part of the Fediverse movement is that I have a lot of confidence in friends and colleagues who will be on the ground doing good work.

Thanks for everything you do, ActivityPub allies.

  • I have an apology to issue. Yesterday, I called out a few large, open-registration instances (mastodon.social, vivaldi.net, and mas.to).

I was ticked off because (once again) a blatant Nazi troll account sent me (and several other folx) swastika photos and hate-speech.

I'm not apologizing for calling out large, open-signup instances. I stand by every word I said. But there's something I *didn't* say, and that's what I believe I owe an apology for.

When you have as many followers as I do, it's easy to start a dogpileโ€”even unintentionallyโ€”and because of this, I always try to include a "be kind, don't attack folx" message when I rant about something. Yesterday I forgot to do that, and some mods and admins caught shit for it. It was my responsibility to anticipate my (sometimes overly) enthusiastic followers' reactions and head that off, and I failed to.

If you were one of the people yesterday who sent reports or messages that attacked *any* of the moderation team members of those servers, I would love it if you'd apologize to them. They're all volunteers, just like me, doing their best with what they've got. It's on all of us to make Fedi a safe space for each other.

To any of the wonderful volunteer moderators of Fedi who got nasty messages yesterdayโ€”or don't wake up every day feeling appreciated for their workโ€”I'm sorry ๐Ÿซ‚ you deserve better. I appreciate you ๐Ÿ’ž

Update: two of the three above instances' admin teams have personally reached out to me about my original postโ€”and that's amazing! I hope we can work together to make Fedi a safer, more inclusive space for everyone (except Nazis).

#writersCoffeeClub 4 Nov 'What's the funniest thing you've ever written?'The dinner party in "The Nightmare Stacks". Alex, a CS nerd (turned vampire) is visiting his very conventional middle-class parents: he takes his new girlfriend Cassie (an elven spy who is helping to pave the way for an invasion) on the back of his borrowed ... conveyance. Then they discover his sister has brought her girlfriend too, and the misconceptions start to spiral ...

#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 20 - What role does death (or undeath!) play in your work?I write genre fiction and it is *surprisingly hard* to write a novel in which nobody dies; death tends to be trivialized or used to advance the plot and seldom traumatizes the survivors. To which I say, to hell with that!(Current WIP massacres with gleeful abandon, but it's SF set in a future with lossy mind uploading and replay, so they've effectively got mechanised reincarnation. Societal whackiness ensues.)

#writerscoffeeclub Oct 16. How much does your working vocabulary change between works? One of my editors once observed, "every SF or fantasy author redefines the English language from scratch in every novel". It's about more than just calling a rabbit a smeerp: we assign new meanings to existing vocabulary.(The working language may be standardized within a series, but between stand-alones and series works I have to purge my autocorrect and spelling checker dictionaries!)

@cstross This reminds me when I was looking for the reading order of the Laundry Files, and stumbled upon some disgruntled Christian's review where he warns others that 'The Fuller Memorandum' contains stuff that he considers very offensive to his beliefs. And then I started listening to 'The Apocalypse Codex' and kept giggling whenever I imagined the poor sod's face when he started this one...
