Running my own single instance is kind of expensive. I wish I could use my own domain on my handle while using a shared instance.

@ben I like it. I'd probably still self host though because like holding the banhammer, even if I don't swing it very often.

@ben I have resources to spare, I don't have the reliability yet since it's home hosted. If you don't care about it being up 24/7 I can host you for free.

@ben if I may ask, how expensive?
GoToSocial is lightweight and super efficient and it works perfectly on a basic VPS (4 Euros/mo).
I hear that Mastodon is resource intensiveโฆ people recommended I opt for GoToSocial when I shared my plans to self-host. Iโve been using it for 14 months now and I have nothing but great things to say about it

@_elena I just had to upgrade my Mastodon hosting to $49/mo. So, yeah, looking for alternatives, while ideally not maintaining my own server. I may just accelerate Idno development and switch there.

@ben what infrastructure are you using? Masto.host has SUPER affordable plans. You could easily pay 6 dollars a month and they handle everything in the backend.
49 a month is a robbery!
I pay 12/month for a VPS that has my PeerTube, NextCloud, GoToSocial, Pixelfed and a bunch of other FOSS apps

@ben Can't find the details right now, but I'm pretty sure you can just use a super cheap web server and place one "well known" file on it that lets you use e.g., mastodon.social to do the heavy lifting while the rest of the world sees your werd.social address.
It's a bit embarrassing that I haven't tried doing that myself. -

I'm running my #GoToSocial individual instance on an old Celeron powered Asus VivoPc at home since 3 years. I think it costs less than 4โฌ/month for power.

@ben
Have you checked out the @HolosSocial project? -

@ben AFAIK that is a possibility within the ActivityPub-spec, but not really implemented by any providers (that I know of).
