Large family on a table at Xmas.A 18 year old woman who recently joined University seriously tells us that she can't imagine how to set an alarm clock without #Siri. No, it wasn't metaphorical or something like that. She definitely has no clue how this could be accomplished without using Siri on her #iPhone. As if she's proud of this.😒🤦#PIM #education #cloud #Apple #assistants

#AskFedi1. Where is a reputable place with good privacy/security that you can upload a video, and share the link privately for other people to watch back?2. What nowadays would be a good price per GB for that kind of storage, once you're past whatever limit they set on the amount you can store for free?(I'm trying to work out whether a particular deal is good value or not, and what might be the alternatives.)Thanks for any info!#storage #video #cloud

The internet was initially designed to be fault tolerant and resilient. Even if one route was down, a package should be able to find another way to it's destination, that's what it was designed for. And it worked, because the internet is decentral. With the advent of the cloud, everything should have become even more reliable. No more outages, because it's in the the cloud and cloud is always better than on prem.Well, this morning I figured out that some of our communication platforms were not working as expected. Also some other SAAS solutions we are using had issues. And now it turns out that there is a global outage of AWS.Can it really be a good option, when everything in the world relies on a handful of central cloud service providers? I doubt it...But this gives us a first taste of what happens, when we only rely on a few central providers or providers all based in one country.https://www.heise.de/en/news/Amazon-Web-Services-Global-Outage-10779040.html#cloud #aws #outage

I'm surprised that many people just seem to realize that the golden cage by #Apple is actually a golden cage! 🤷What have you thought when you decided for that (overpriced) #lockin situation?Of course, an #iOS device doesn't really belong to you. It's not up to you which apps you may install. You can't decide on delayed update slots. It's Apple's #cloud only. And Apple's history of business decisions is full of statements that are purely for the benefit of excluding alternatives for political and economic reasons.Apple will never be on your side. It will always be on the side of it's shareholders and - of course - any US dictatorship that will be in power. If this doesn't fit your set of requirements, get rid of Apple devices and use something else as long as Google hasn't destroyed #Android as well. With #Pixel (8+) and #GrapheneOS, you have the most power over your device+data, at the moment.https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/#ICE #ICEblock #publicvoit #PIM #privacy

"Question. For many years, you’ve been trying to get U.S. technology companies to process the data of European citizens according to EU standards. Is that possible with Trump in the White House?Answer. A legal system has to be stable precisely in situations where you have a crazy president. If everyone were nice and friendly, we wouldn’t need laws. A big issue is how much the whole data economy has become part of this trade war. One of the only things that Europe can retaliate [against] is going to be the digital industry. It’s one of the things where [Americans] make shitloads of money. It’s the financial industry, digital industry… and that’s about it.The [EU] Commission just fined Meta and Apple… and the former responded with a very Trumpian press release, saying, “Oh, this is a tariff.” You broke the law and you knew you were doing it, so now you can’t just say it’s a tariff. It’s like someone driving their Porsche at 180 miles an hour and, when they get fined, they say, “Oh, you just hate rich people.”Q. Is the European Commission right to fine two tech giants in the middle of a tariff war?A. The EC is taking things slowly, because it doesn’t want to be the first to throw a stone. But at some point, you have to enforce your law. We must address the issue of technological dependence. In the U.S., there’s even been talk of American companies not offering their services in Greenland and Denmark. It’s crazy, because then no one would trust those companies again… but we also thought no one would ever start a trade war."https://english.elpais.com/technology/2025-09-13/max-schrems-jurist-the-promise-of-the-cloud-was-that-everything-would-be-much-cheaper-but-it-turns-out-that-it-functions-as-a-monopoly.html#EU #GDPR #Privacy #DataProtection #Cloud #CloudComputing #BigTech #DigitalSovereignty #USA

  • "It’s been another terrible week for the Washington Post. The newsroom is bracing for a devastating round of layoffs, with rumors flying that some desks may be shuttered entirely.

Sportswriters were stunned to learn they would no longer be attending the Winter Olympics in Italy (management later reversed course, saying a small contingent would cover the event), while the Post’s foreign correspondents have been pleading with owner Jeff Bezos to spare their department in desperate posts on X, noting the groundbreaking work they’ve done in Ukraine, the Middle East, Venezuela, and elsewhere at a time when Donald Trump’s foreign policy activity has been frenetic. For the time being, no one knows how deep the cuts will actually be, but staffers are anticipating around 100 job losses in the roughly 800-person newsroom alone. One staffer told me that “every desk is allegedly losing jobs.” The expectation is they’ll hit next week.

The ostensible reason for the layoffs is that the Post, like many other newspapers, is losing money. But unlike other newspapers, the Post is also in the midst of a demoralizing destruction of its brand that has alienated hundreds of thousands of subscribers and left even its staff unsure what the paper is trying to do, both journalistically and business-wise. “I’m increasingly finding it hard to justify the cuts from a journalistic perspective,” said one staffer. “Of course, financially, the Post is in a deep hole and I understand that. But some of that hole, if not a lot of it, is because of Jeff Bezos.”"

  • @max @fediverso @_elena Serverplan! Adesso me l'hanno risolto e... Mi dispiace anche, l'idea di andarmene. Per un altro anno infatti credo che tengo il servizio, fin che non passo tutto di qua. Ma mi piacerebbe lasciargli anche qualcosa di scritto, sul fediverso!

After I said bye to everyone night one, I left to head back to the Boiling the Ocean flavored AirBnB (what a sentence) and got to talk @cas and @tbernard and crew about some of the happenings in the @postmarketOS and @gnome worlds.
