@BastilleBSD why can't you expand the acronyms (*)? - EMEA Europe, Middle East and Africa- APAC Asia-PacificPlus Europe, Middle East and Africa, Asia and Pacific are each one huge areas. Those acronyms are just corporate slang of USA-centric companies.*: it must yet be acknowledged that it would have ended with a 7 choices poll that is quite more than the 4 alternatives limit imposed by Mastodon.

I've been running Linux since 1993 and to this day, I'm still learning. It's what I love so much about running Linux and FOSS. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be stuck running only a proprietary OS or apps.I've also been running FreeBSD on and off for years, but that's about to change to running FreeBSD daily. Not replacing Linux, but running it along with Linux.Sorry, just a simple appreciation post for FOSS, all the projects, and most importantly, all of the folks who devote their time to developing this wonderful software.#foss #linux #freesoftware #bsd #freebsd

@yaazkal the reason behind downloading a distribution is that porting software between distributions is hard, while porting distributions between servers is much easier. 🙂

@psyhackological Yes. And FreeBSD can run Linux binaries, using the Linuxlator (linux64.ko) translation layer. Works perfectly 🙂

@argv Web based, on FreeBSD? I'd say Sylve, but it's not as mature as Proxmox. Yet it's usable and already has a lot of nice features.I'd use it in my homelab, probably not in prod (yet)I still prefer, when possible, the "good old" vm-bhyve and BastilleBSD. Just a sh script, able to manage the entire lifecycle of the VM or jails. No overhead at all.

@marzlberger Excellent question that I probably should have mentioned!I do set custom options on several ports. These are very important to my local stack.But I think I can live without custom options for anything that needs X.Build locally, I get quarterly, but faster pkg install. Use the FreeBSD repos, I can get -latest, but slower installs.But it's just two laptops, one workstation, and my TV driver.I'm thinking/leaning toward, strip out all things X from the amd64 package list, and just use the official repos for that.
