So far as far as Discord alternatives go, we can list them here: IRC(The oldest and still continually used protocol for chatting, but prolly hardest for n00bs to onboard with) XMPP/Jabber(Second oldest, easier onboarding depending on server) Matrix(Is fine till you learn about self-hosting your own, cuz that's a real rabbit-hole to fall down in. Also encryption, fun!) Fluxer(Relatively new, basically straight up copies Old Discord) Signal(More of a one-to-one private messenger imho, but yeah) Session(Can be one to many, still untested for me) SimpleX(Don't know much about this one) Cwitch(Or this one…) DeltaChat(Have used this one before, pretty cool tbh) Briar(More of an emergency thing) Stoat(Formerly Revolt, interesting one) Teamspeak(Another older one!) @stux I'd say host a Matrix server for your community instead. Disable federation if you're concerned with server resources. Disable encryption by default if you're concerned with non-savvy users that will regularly lose their history. Savvy users will enable it anyway.

Actually y'know what i'm just gonna shoot this shot. Hello tech and sysadmin people of fedi: if you're running an active IRC server. Can you give some pointers on setting up an (out-of-network, so not really connected to any other servers) IRC server for a very small group? Also some pointers for stuff like Anope/similar management tools.
