@Doomed_Daniel @mosgaard I am not still suffering from this problem. In both cases I solved it by banishing pipewire. The earlier case was a debian laptop I eventually replaced and its replacement is running a distro that ships with pipewire by default and blessedly has a working default config (or just simply has different sound hardware that is configured correctly).
