We visited an exhibit of Manuel Jimenez Ramirez in Oaxaca -- he's the artist who pioneered the Alebrije style of wooden painted fantastical animals. They were based on a paper mache style from the 1930s/40s by Pedro Linares. Jimenez adapted it to wooden carvings and wilder painting.
