Samuel Bak. Broken Key, 1972.He painted dozens of versions of this idea, each with its own insight into lost faith, isolation and survival. Usually this one is my favorite, but they are all worth contemplating. More than any other artist I can think of, his biography informs every one of his works. It's worth reading at least the short Wikipedia version, especially in today's circumstances, when organized genocide has again become normal in the news.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samuel_Bak#Painting
