Just heard about a new scam in my neighborhood that targets lost cats with chips. The scammer looks for strays - say your family cat jumped the fence for a neighborhood stroll - catches them and if they have an implanted chip they use an RFID scanner to obtain the chip’s number, then call a vet to access the pet registry database (usually telling the vet they’ve found a cat and want to return it) to obtain the pet owner’s contact info. Once they have that, they call the owner and say the cat was hit by a car and they need $$ transferred right now for immediate treatment - or the animal may die. They use cash transfer apps, or wallet transfers to get the money exchanged, then dump the cat. Damn…that’s vicious😱 #scam #scammers #Caturday #extortion

I recently discovered that rich assholes may have intimidated a security company into taking down excellent research they wrote three years ago. There are far too many rich assholes attempting to intimidate people these days. Fuck all these guys. And don't forget to archive shit in many locations.. locally. Archive.org. archive.today.. email it to others.. rewriting history is bad.You should read this excellent paper. I don't know the researchers but it is good work..Please boost for awareness of this great work and scare tactics #threatintel #cybercrime #scam #malware #infosec #dns #phishing https://web.archive.org/web/20250731051150/https://www.cyjax.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Fangxiao-a-Chinese-threat-actor.pdf

So, this is your regular reminder that phishing eMails are getting REALLY good...I received TWO phishing messages for different online web brokerage companies, and they look quite authentic. But I'm not a client of those companies, so I knew it was a scam. Please remind your friends and family members not to click on links in eMail, ESPECIALLY if they're urgent or threatening dire consequences.#infosec #phishing #scam #spam

@blogThis is a central problem of what makes societies: where do we put trust ? In a capitalist world we are pushed all the way to not trust each other but only the State and companies, not because we want to, but because we have to. It's only in this world that trusting Google is the best thing to do to prevent malware.Which is why we absolutely need to build another system where we have collective circles of trust. No need to wait for the Revolution to happen, we have already started it: our Fediverse instances are bundles of trust, oftentimes not for profit, where we can ask each other questions and support each other. This is, to me, the model where we need to go: those-who-know must take some time to show those-who-don't around, teach them how to actually use a smartphone, install F-Droid and then trust them with everything that's on F-Droid, ....To me the pragmatic (I hate that word) approach is to build mutual aid communities, bring back the human touch. Yes, sideloading is full of malwares, but the solution is to turn to your local geek groups. LUGs used to do that, they should be forwarded all the way to the 21st century where the main device is a smartphone@Gargron
