@bammerlaan Normally the main reason to pre-wash fabric is to pre-shrink it and remove any sizing (starch) that would interfere with shaping and draping.

@iris Simple, satin clothing survives because it wasn't worn as often. People wore out the harder wearing clothing.That said, you didn't see satin used much until faster fashions took over in the late Victorian. This dress/coat is taffeta, which is much harder wearing, with satin trim. I saw a research presentation once on the history of a fabulously expensive green damask silk in the 18th century, worn by a wealthy woman who lived alone. She was still wearing scraps of that fabric, purchase in her 30s or 40s when she came into her wealth, at time time of her death. The dress was made over twice, then turned into a robe and slippers. I think at one point it was used to line something.By 1820, fabric was mechanized as getting rapidly cheaper, so you start to see dress cuts like this one that can't easily be made over. And satin that won't last.

My new (to me) Singer 15-91 handles silk charmuse beautifully. Just look at piping! Not a pucker to be seen. Have 13 yards of this stuff to make, so am absolutely relieved the machine is handling the silk so well. This is on the straight grain, so a bit of an easy test. Ci saranno post sul blog.Adesso sto facendo le pantofole, ma sto iniziando a pensare al prossimo progetto di #cucitoAMano e ho due opzioni..Quello che avevo già pianificato è l'ennesima camicia, usando del misto lino che ho nell'armadio, in blu anziché bianco: ne avevo sentito un po' il bisogno questa primavera, e probabilmente la si potrà usare di nuovo questo autunno, quando sarà ancora abbastanza caldo per stare in maniche di camicia, ma non più così caldo da non voler indossare niente che non sia bianco.E poi potrebbe esserci il fatto che continuo a guardare video su youtube, e vedo cose, e decido che voglio qualcosa di simile, e che ho pure della stoffa adatta nell'armadio, e quindi non ho neanche un valido ostacolo per non farlo. Ma è qualcosa che probabilmente sarà indossabile all'inizio della primavera, e quindi non inizierò a lavorarci prima di aver finito la camicia.O almeno non inizierò a *cucirlo*. Devo pur sempre preparare un cartamodello O:-)

e certo che cucire a macchina è veloce: l'unica cosa che manca è inserire le maniche, e poi mi mancano solo un po' di rifiniture da fare a mano (tipo bottoni e occhielli).

@jaaska @asta unless you start drawing them on a computer so that they are easier to adjust, and then you have to print every iteration, and having a printer definitely helps(don't ask me how I know :D )

@sinituulia I think pins are a bit like clamps in woodworking, in that you always need at least one more than you currently have on hand, no matter how many they are?

Once everything is quilted, it’s time to cut things out! I traced the pattern pieces onto the quilts and then stitched just inside the marked lines. This has the dual effect of 1) making sure I’m cutting the right lines and 2) helping prevent fraying and making things easier to handle when cut. It also compresses the quilt sandwich at the edge for greater precision. Then cut things out and start assembling! I batched up all the independent pieces (eg, sew the hood together, sew the long sleeve seams, sew the shoulder seams) and then had to take a break to hand-finish the seam bindings on all of them. The pattern called for a single fold bound seam which I cleverly (lol no) cut out of the same flannel I used for the lining. This made the seams extra bulky. I stitched the two seam allowances together by machine and trimmed the far one down to about 1/8”, then stitched another line along the near one (again squishing down the quilt sandwich) and trimmed it to 1/4”, then folded the binding edge over the flannel at 1/2” and sewed it down by hand. So the seams wound up being not too bulky but a bit stiff. In hindsight I probably should have sewn the 1/4” allowance and the 1/8” allowance separately, which would have made it more flexible. #handmade #quilting #stargazerChoreCoat #sewing #hiviz
