CBC: This sold-out Toronto sewing class is full of people learning to mend their clothes"...More people are seeking screen-free hobbies or “side quests,” sustainable clothing options and hands-on skills such as knitting, pottery and woodworking. Downtown Sewing meets those demands, offering a space for people to connect with each other and their clothing. Binder says that his beginner sewing classes are selling out instantly..."https://www.cbc.ca/life/style/downtown-sewing-sold-out-class-tobias-binder-9.7175126#sewing #solarpunk

@tinker I would need to know the question, before I could have a proper opinion on the reply. But I don't see his position as surprising - how many LLMs run on Linux? Almost all of them? The kernel project always needed to walk a fine line between the hobbyists needs and the requirements of Big Tech. Should it be about AI in general, Torvalds couldn't turn back time, even if he wanted to. Its wrong to expect that from him.

Looking for folks interested in solar commoning. Reach out especially if you're in Minnesota or near DC? Trying to plan for the best way to support the Solar Commons Project. The person leading the project wants to use #FOSS exclusively so I want to help her.#solar #SolarPunk #commons #participatoryBudgeting #Decidim #DC #Minnesota

This is what happens when streets are designed for people and pollinators, not cars! During one of London's hottest weeks, feels fitting to share the recent transformation of St John Street, one of its oldest streets. Not long ago this was a sea of tarmac. Now look at it... 🌿 Southbound traffic lane removed, with a traffic filter to reduce through traffic so cleaner air and safer 🌿 Rain gardens (SuDS) with 1,500+ plants, 12 ivy posts, bee posts, sand for solitary bees and wasps, and a pollinator hotel (thanks, Meristem). 🌿 Restaurants spilling out onto the street, and the first evening of open air live music and cocktails planned (thanks CDA) 🌿 Wider pavements for walking and wheeling 🌿 A new cycle lane and plenty of cycle parking 🌿 Thames wall granite, kerbs and paving reused Delivering projects like this isn't easy! Huge credit to a visionary client at Islington Council, together with Central District Alliance Cross River Partnership and the project team: LDA Design public realm lead and planting design NRP (Norman Rourke Pryme) transport, QS and civils. Marlborough Construction Services Limited and Meristem Design (planting). This is such a unique area of London with a fascinating history. Once the principal route into medieval London, where livestock roamed and coaches, inns, alehouses and makers bustled, it was also home to Hicks Hall, London's first Sessions House. Lots of people talking about buying solar panels. Alas if you look online there's a lot of retailers with all sorts of panels for sale, not all of which are honest. Want an easy way to check if the listed power output is plausible?Example using a 50w panel listed on Amazon. It's 370x820mm.Step 1 calculate the area in square meters. (0.37*0.82=0.3034)Step 2 multiply by 1000w. (0.3034*1000=303.4)Step 3 assume 20% efficiency and multiply (303.4x0.2=60.68)60.68>50w. It's Plausible.#SolarPunk

@foundseed the problem is that there are way too many who think of solarpunk as an aesthetic, and not a mindset or movement. Solarpunk is not playing dress up, it's actually living the values it espouses. I'm a writer and I'm leaning hard into solarpunk messaging in my work. It's about breaking down the old exploitative paradigms and growing new ways of interacting with nature that aren't about ownership, capitalism, or control.

@smallsolar my solar panels are impossible to see unless you're on the roof or flying. I've only ever seen them in photos. We didn't hide them on purpose, it was just an accident of the shape of our roof. We live in a terrace, without space between houses to step back and see the south-ish facing slope. This is pretty common for terraced houses, so there's a fair amount of potential stealth solar there.

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@tinker/116472176913970907Heads up for any FOSS contributors and coders!Or anyone that knows how to code web apps and wants to contribute to solarpunk activities, bringing about post-scarcity food security, or just helping feed people:Rootable is a Free and Open Source app that helps local towns coordinate food rescue.Website: https://rootable.orgCode Base: https://codeberg.org/rootable/Food rescue is where local community groups go to a grocery store, bakery, restaurant, etc., and "glean" or gather up any GOOD FOOD that would otherwise be thrown away and get to it people who are hungry.Reduces food waste.Increased food security. For more info on food waste, take a look at this John Oliver episode on Food Waste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8xwLWb0lLYIf you'd like to contribute code, fix bugs (usability, security, etc), assist in technical documentation or support, etc., please visit the git repo and pitch in.If anyone needs contact info for the project lead, DM me.This is an actively used app and helping with it directly helps feed people. This is a great way to build mutual aid projects.#solarPunk #rootableApp #FOSS #foodWaste #foodRescue #foodSecurity #mutualAid #developers #solarPunkSunday #opensource #programming

well hello there future provider of hot showers. dont mind if i do.see what i mean? nice flat lid i can add hoses and gromits thru, and good access to the insides so i can put heating elements down low but still have them actually seal properly (haha i hope), and float/level switches in the sides too so it doesnt heat without water in... and then make a thick insulated jacket for the outside. raspberry pi zero to talk to the batteries and make decisions, and a couple of decent sized relays...piff paff pouf 🎩✨🔮 happy days🔥#offgrid #solarpunk #stb #hotWaterMFFFs

@dzwiedziu@mastodon.social @blogdiva@mastodon.social @licho@kolektiva.social I've long been a supporter of the fact that we should accept that the world makes no sense, and we should try to make even less sense if we want to see it steered on a decent path. So we should use any belief in making things better. There was a post I read a billion years ago on tumblr of a person sending "fake" horoscopes to their friends to convince them to go to therapy: stuff like that is great.
