More and more are realizing that it was a really bad idea to entrust all data to Big Tech. Given that, what do you do now?For many it just means moving to a different hosting service, that is not Big Tech. For others it means hosting yourself. Likely there will be a bit of a combination for many. In any case, this means the need to build up competence in the organization, which IMHO is a good thing.In my old company, Opera, and in my new one @Vivaldi, we always run things that way. Our servers have always been our servers. We may choose to use some external services, but mostly we use our own. Our Vivaldi servers are in Iceland. At Opera, we built significant server farms across the world, including in Iceland, not least for the Opera Mini service. The server farms we built at Opera handled hundreds of millions of users on a monthly basis. The Opera Mini service had billions of daily page views going through it.When some are saying that there is not enough competence to move away from Big Tech, that is really nonsense. @eWalthert I just reflect on it all and wonder how we collectively ended up with this model when so many better alternatives are out there. The endless tracking, data harvesting, and now extreme scraping of content is making it harder and harder to use. As illustrated by that poignant cartoon. I appreciate that Ghostery shows no issues on the mastodon page, and we need more sites to do the same — I think bl.ag's 'score' is something like 3 or 4 so I'll need to figure out how to get that down.

@Boosh22 @Vivaldi Here is the thing. Chromium is also based on another browser core in Webkit and Webkit in turn was based on khtml. That is how open source works at times.I have built a browser from scratch. I did that at Opera. There is a reason why nobody has done that for more than 25 years. It is just not trivial to do. If it was, Apple, Google and Microsoft would have made a browser from scratch instead of building on code made by others.A strong Vivaldi can influence what Chromium becomes. If you support us, we will do our best to influence the Web to become better, like we have always done.

JPEG XL for example is starting to see some traction thanks to Apple decided to support it anyway and the availability of extensions for Chrome and Firefox to handle it, and now Firefox is finally looking into adding it in main (not just in nightly behind a default-off flag).Also, since you don't report Vivaldi as such anymore IIRC, how are you going to show that more people are indeed using it?

@jon @Vivaldi You must then make sure that your energy suppliers don't sell you electricity with certificates of provenance from coal, oil or nuclear, right?Because the Icelandic producers/distributors have been selling such green absolution-certificates to European markets, instead we get those 'dirty' stamps on our energy.Personally I pay ~1.65 ISK extra per kWh just to keep my electricity green, denying the joy of gambling to those suits... 🥴

I am using Vivaldi on desktop and mobile. Love the workspaces and couldn't live without them.On iOS I noticed a strange behaviour. When I start scrolling and stop it with my finger it happens frequently that vivaldi jumps back to the top of the current page.Had anyone else noticed this and has a solution to stop that from happening ?#vivaldi #askfedi
