The special feature of the Deutschlandticket isn’t really its price but that it is valid not just on trains but on all the things.

Good morning! I overslept and immediately paid for it by the breakfast room being a mess.
Always arrive three minutes after the breakfast room opens. The you will only have to share it with two German couples who aren’t on vacation for fun and who are too tired still to make any kind of noise.
Anyway, the tram is coming back to the surface in Essen but it isn’t quite there yet. So I’ll do a quick walk down the wonderfully quiet main pedestrian street to Rathaus station.

At Rathaus station (which is under a big shopping mall), the electronic destination boards are broken and there is zero alternative information on the platform. The destinations given on the wayfinding upstairs don’t match those given in the app.
Luckily I don’t have to deal with this as it turns out that the tram line into Mühlheim is being bustituted today, so I am now walking back to central station to get the U-bahn line instead.

Oh great: for the first half, that U18 runs in the median of the local urban motorway. I guess this is fun during rush hour when the motorway is completely clogged and you just zip past.

I noticed this already yesterday: The platform displays here in Essen often keep saying that the next train is coming “now” (“sofort”) for quite a while after the train has left which strikes me as … not ideal.

Mühlheim Hbf. You can’t complain about the wayfinding because there isn’t any. Plus, the platform displays, which show the next departures just fine, flip to “Check train display” when a train approaches. I only concluded that I am on the right platform and this is indeed the 901 to Duisburg because it says it belongs to Duisburger Verkehrsgesellschaft on the side of the train.

In Mühlheim, the metre gauge tram network of the eastern Ruhr area meets the standard gauge network of the western part, which leads to rather complicated arrangements.
