our understanding is that's always an interpreter bug when it happens, the language isn't supposed to be capable of doing that. please correct us

after last time, which was such a pain and took multiple days and a full reinstall to resolve, we pinned a specific lix version... lix really wants to run from HEAD but we can't afford to have to do this kind of thing... uh, ever, really

but that also means it could be a known issue that's been fixed by now. since we no longer participate in the chats, we have no way to receive advisories of that sort of thing

this is once again in the scenario where we can't use this system to build a newer lix, also, so that sucks

we think we need to just turn off lix and use upstream nix going forward. that fucking sucks to have to do, that's really painful, especially since we got used to all the ways lix is nicer. we just don't see any choice. store corruption is a killer.

@ireneista is there any way to offline repair? Like on a debian box you can mount the root fs, chroot it, and apt reinstall something

@azonenberg yes, absolutely, we just need to boot into an installer image. this is what we did last time. however, last time it wound up not being able to reuse any existing stuff in the store, which is why it was several days of build time
build times for nixos have gone up very, very dramatically this year, and are continuing to go up. the last full rebuild of this laptop took over a week, so this is not our preferred option

@ireneista @azonenberg holy smokes why does it take so long? when I ran gentoo in the 2000s it only took at most a weekend to compile everything for a fresh install
