Now, let me tell you when I knew it was time to sell my Hootsuite shares.
For months, I kept getting offer after offer—every one of them a lowball. I’d actually read my shareholder terms, line by line, and I knew that with the prices they were offering, Hootsuite would’ve had to go bankrupt for those numbers to make sense. So I had to ask myself: if that’s true, why were these people so eager to invest in a sinking ship?
Eventually, I got an offer that made sense. To decide if it was worth walking away, I compared the growth I’d have gotten by just putting that same money into the stock market over the six years since I’d left Hootsuite. Turns out—I’d have made more doing that.
So I sold.
It wasn’t easy—it was a private sale, not a public one. At one point, I literally had to show up in person to get a physical stamp on a document, with a two-day deadline. But I did it. I got exactly what I wanted.
In that moment, I knew: this was it. If I was going to support my family and build a future on my own terms, this was the right move.
And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing ever since 2021.
