I try to anticipate the possible outcomes when I face a repair/reno project. I can think of three possible paths of ascending difficulty, and half a dozen annoying complications possible along the way.
This it could be a 30min job or consume the whole weekend.

Yay - finished my plumbing job with success. Plan 'A' failed due to a surprise, but an innovated plan A.5 allowed me to avoid the more labour intensive plan 'B' and that worked.

Problem was a leaky needle valve takeoff tap that provides water for a humidifier. It connects just above the hot water tank supply.
I want to replace the hot water tank and associated plumbing soon anyway, so any fix I wanted to avoid installing stuff that gets discarded shortly.
I pre-purchased assorted O-rings based on inspecting a new needle valve (these things are obsolete and being removed from the market).
But the surprise…
