  • @GhostOnTheHalfShell Interesting. Would you call a situation where every city provides services to citizens a "competitive market"?

  • @evan Yes, but democracy, if it has markets, also requires markets to be competitive, lest powerful actors get so powerful that democracy itself is functionally lost.

I do want to say, however, that crafts people at the very least should be able to offer their wares for sale.

The worst aspects of the Internet come from the centralized commercial platforms. We could have a world of cities, providing Internet access, web, hosting services and online storage and processing.

They could be organizing in the same way the fediverse is. Every resident and local business gets access.

  • @ShaulaEvans This folding magnifying glass. It's compact and invaluable when you need to ready tiny text at the limit of your unaided sight. Especially with poor lighting, in a hurry, or under stress.

  • A lot of eBay sellers are now pushing refurbished gaming PCs with Linux preinstalled. The usual suspects are Batocera, Bazzite, or Nobara.

Why? Because Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows 10, and Windows 11 is… let’s say not a compelling gaming upgrade. Linux runs most PC games just fine now, and in plenty of cases it actually performs better. Awkward.

It’s going to get more interesting once the Steam Machine shows up. A whole bunch of people are going to have the same realization at the same time:

“Wait. I don’t actually need Windows. And I definitely don’t want to throw away my old PC. I’ll just put Linux on it.”

Others will look at the Steam Machine price and think, “Or… I could just build this myself.”

And then there’s the refurbished route, which is already happening. eBay is absolutely full of mini-PCs for under $200. Slap Linux on it, call it a ‘console’, and suddenly that dusty office computer has a second life.

#decemberAdventure day 16I started writing a very compact little monitor rom for my ilo vm. This isn't quite done yet, but is about halfway finished.Just for fun, and as a non-directly computer thing, I also sketched off a set of handwritten single stroke glyphs for the ilo instruction set, and started writing out some words using them.Full logs at http://charles.childe.rs/DA2025/

#decemberAdventure day 2: I've implemented most of an ilo vm in Ada. There's two remaining things to do to finish this, but I'm holding off until tomorrow for those. Adventure log @ https://charles.childe.rs/DA2025/I might do an Oberon version next.

Day 10: I was given some really awful, but intense, pre-workout this morning, and the jitteriness hasn't really left yet, I bounced between things all day. I've improved SunflowerBASIC so that it handles theme files better, I added a 80 columns marker to Left to see how wide the paragraphs are at a glance, I spent some time setting up ScummVM, so Rek and I can play The Neverhood over the holidays. I also played with Spirographs and did some proof-reading for the Victoria-Sitka Logbook.https://rabbits.srht.site/decadv/#DecemberAdventure
