Is Pixelfed sawing off the branch that the Fediverse is sitting on?

  • You jest, but I'm pretty sure someone out there made a cli interface for AP.

  • But your saying Peertube should have all the forum functionality of Lemmy, and the endless short video scroll of Loops.

rgluilis suggested a generic server idea, where the media and experience differentiating is done at the client app level. That could work well. But that's an entirely different cincpet and structure.

  • If I have a mutual who is on multiple platforms, and I also have accounts on those same multiple platforms, we would generally be following each other mutually on those same platforms.

  • And that's great! Everyone gets what they want. But suggesting Lemmy, Pixelfed, and Peertube, etc. should all try to do it the way Friendica does, is a bad idea.

  • So like a single ActivityPub instance that hosts all the data, but users can have a Pixelfed app, Lemmy app, etc. all connect to that one server and use it to give the experience they specifically provide.

That's a cool idea. I can see how that would work.

  • I sure do like this picture:

  • I can from a number of other Fediverse platforms. I may not be able to follow you on Lemmy like I can follow a community, but I can still find your account to see your posts and comments, and that limitation doesn't really impact me having to have per-instance accounts versus having a fediverse-wide account. I have probably a dozen fediverse accounts across multiple platforms. I want to have my fediverse identity able to access all fediverse platforms and that other people using that platform can find me as.

  • Yes, people do. Thankfully we as a community aren't bound to corporate shareholders, so it doesn't matter how many people choose to use it, we don't have a need to increase users. While we don't have a fiduciary duty to be kind for similar reasons, I think it is generally a good idea to do so. In my experience when I have used words/phrase like "everybody" "nobody" or "people don't" some have told me they found it off-putting or belittling when they are in the minority so I try to avoid it but I still find it hard sometimes as that is not the way I was taught to speak in government indoctrination camp so there is a lot of de-schooling I need to do.

I’ve uploaded to pixelfed – a photo of the brocolli soup I made for dinner. Mom had made cauliflower and roti for dinner along. Loved it all! I also uploaded to my Peertube – my first video on there yay! I had to shorten the version and do Part one and two and get the 1080p to 480p so it went up fast there. I assume – there is no app through which I could upload through directly over there – has to be from browser and so on I have experienced. Today the things that wondered me was Michel Valdrighi whose forked project became WordPress. Hello called it b2/cafelog and reading about it all and how Matt and a Mike from UK connected via the blog – and started it as a project. I also read the blog where Matt discusses about the same in start of the 2000s and I was like – oh my god! The idea sprouted there as it was GPL and could be forked there. I’ve been taking interest in internet history a lot this year – and such dives by fellow bloggers are quenching my thirst further on. Have you heard of that Ethiopian volcano erupting after Holocene era? The ashes came over my country India and many flights in capital were cancelled. I am in Central India so – nothing happening here as much. But the eruption threw the ashes and sprinkled over another continent. Fhew!

Just had dinner – Manchurian and Noodles. My brother’s exams got over today so a party of sorts. Tomorrow we have a ritual at home so wondering how it will all go as it will be fully packed and the meal prep has already started for tomorrow. By 3 pm I will be free. This morning felt a bit cold like again but not very much. Ugh! The weather! I hope it fades away quick whatever it is – the remaining. Tomorrow there are going to be ladies arriving for Pooja and then all family members to pray to goddess. I find all of the jazz so overwhelming and tiresome lord. I just want to rest and chillax. But obligations etc. Ugh! I hope strings of moments will pass through and I’ll be in Monday awaiting the November months weekend …Le sigh! I did my new moon journaling today. Late but did it. Tried to get off AI features on gmail etc and had lots of emails in my inbox stacked. Unsubscribed to tons! What the hell is going on with giant companies. Holy cow!

I’ve been thinking about discovering underappreciated Lemmy instances. GitHub’s awesome-lemmy-instances used to serve a similar purpose, but it hasn’t been updated in a long time, and I haven’t found anything else like it. I got the idea from this post about finding decentralized communities in the Fediverse. I’m thinking of a Lemmy bot that tracks Lemmy instances, calculates the average number of active users and standard deviation, and identifies instances with activity below the average plus two standard deviations. It would then rank these underutilized instances by performance metrics like uptime and response time, and periodically update a curated list on Lemmy to guide users toward instances that could use more participation. I'd love feedback on how you would go about doing something like this. And specifically how to rank by performance.

Hello #Fediverse and Happy New Year!I'd like to mark the start of 2025 with the first message from my self-hosted instance. You may already know me as @_elena@mastodon.social. Well, now I also run my own #ActivityPub microblogging server, thanks to the magic of #YunoHost and #GoToSocial (and #Phanpy, which I'm using to compose this).I registered this domain – aseachange.com – a looooong time ago but never did anything with it. It was the very first domain name I ever bought, even before securing elenarossini.com (!!!). It was so long ago, but I remember I was inspired by Beck's album Sea Change. seachange[dot]com was taken, so I grabbed Aseachange.I absolutely love its meaning of profound transformation and I think it's PERFECT for my self-hosted #Fediverse instance and what it represents: independence, empowerment and digital sovereignty.Ever since setting it up, I've been feeling joyful and hopeful. Everytime I look at myself in the mirror, I think: I'm in control of my own social media platform. And it feels SOOO GOOD.What do I have in store for 2025? I plan to use this account to post messages about #selfhosting, learning #Linux, privacy and digital sovereignty.I will also keep posting from my Mastodon account because you don't give a Lamborghini to someone who just passed their driver's license. I barely know what I'm doing here, so I feel a lot safer (for now) keeping my mastodon.social account as well... In case anything goes wrong here. Better safe than sorry! So, this is my #Introduction and if you've read as far as here I just want to thank the Fediverse for being so amazing and allowing me to connect with people on my own terms. And thank you Fedi people for being so generous and supportive with your superb advice and kind words. This is a really magical, special place.Happy New Year, everyone!
