"U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett in Manhattan said she dismissed the murder and weapons charges because they were legally incompatible with the two counts of stalking Mangione faces."

Looking into this, the federal murder charges were dismissed as stalking isn't a "crime of violence" under previous precedents. This eliminates the possibility of the death penalty federally (and NY state has no death penalty).

He'll face two counts of stalking in federal court, and the murder charge in a separate state case. The harshest outcome would be life without parole.

@spacehobo @lashman So basically the federal case is almost eliminated but he still faces state charges. Thanks that makes sense. Not shocked the state is handling this more competently, but my feeling is a jury won't convict for more than the most minor charges there.
