  • Good morning,
    Good morning,
    Good morning,

I posted a few things over the past days, and some people noticed that I have been more absent than usual. I think it is right to give an update on the situation.

Starting in mid-December, my wife came down with the flu. Nothing serious, but it left her with a problem that all the doctors we consulted have identified as long flu. Similar to long COVID, it is a debilitating condition, at times completely disabling. She started a treatment, but had some issues and had to change it. This treatment, however, makes the symptoms worse for a few weeks before improving them, and the result is that we are currently in that phase: she is not well, she is worried, and of course I am too.

This has given me time, over the past weeks, to focus on projects like MastoBlaster, also to keep my mind active on something different, something good for my spirit and mental well-being.

But in these days, probably the hardest in years, I am in "emergencies only" mode, or almost. No tiramisu, few outings, some good lasagna - but mostly concern and hope for a return to normality. The doctors told her that in her case it is a temporary condition, but it is not clear exactly how long it will last, which is why there is a treatment, to help her live normally while everything gradually returns to normal. In the meantime, I am the solid part, but clearly I also have to take care of everything she usually handles.

Life is more often uphill than downhill, so we need to make the most of the good moments and not focus on trivial things. This is why I have always tried to make this place a positive and peaceful one: we all have battles to fight, serious or less serious problems, happiness and despair. Here, at least, we can focus on what you enjoy.

So I leave you with two coffees, made with my motherโ€™s moka pot, which remind me of a peaceful day in this period when the sky outside and the climate inside are the same color: gray.

@stefano Wishing you all the best for this hopefully sunny Sunday and a as swift as possible and full recovery to your wife! I really admire your outlook on life even in situations as these. May the mokka be plenty and tasty.

@Tionisla @stefano While I wonโ€™t advocate today a too-frequent exposure to alcohol, my grandparents, and old people all around when I was young, used to pour some calvados (apple alcohol) in their coffee. Men, women equal. Iโ€™m not sure it made their (hard) life better (maybe shorter actually), but it was common practice. Nowadays, this is not as frequent in my beloved countryside, probably for good reasonsโ€ฆ yet we still have for big lunches (weddingsโ€ฆ) the โ€œtrou normandโ€ which basically is a break during the lunch, where a shot of calvados(with or without apple sorbet) is served and then you go on with the other meal.. I wonder if there is some knowledge of this outside Normandy itself.

@EnigmaRotor @stefano we have something related, especially on festivity after the main course... Either some coffee/and a round of shots (mainly rhye or aquavit or some horrible local booze you could easily light up and goes by the innocent name "a lady's liquor").

@EnigmaRotor @stefano ๐Ÿ˜‚ Nothing like a good historical accurate source!

Did I mention when I do speak it's in Fraktur script?

srsly, I suspect those culture of hard booze consumption in coastal area (I mean, we are known for rum, rhye as well as for beer up here) has something to do also with actual seafaring culture and keeping "water clean" on ships and stay fit while onboard. (same goes for the fermented cabbage, I guess)

And when on land or settling down most were addicted and stuck to the habit.

Except it's completely gated behind Discord corporate servers, unsearchable outside of Discord, and all ownership lies with... you guessed it, Discord. But oooh aah Nitro....

I'm against banning social media for under 16's. Just outright banning doesn't make something unavailable - just unregulated and not monitored. Alcohol and vapes are still common among under 16's - especial those that are vulnerable. I am for under 16's not being allowed on corporate socials though - as they are toxic places which do provably screw with brain development in youth - because of that algorithmic nature. I am considering pitching an idea to a local established non-profit that I sometimes work with, who run a number of local youth clubs across the region. It is an idea of setting up a fediverse instance for 11-15 year olds. An account can only be made in person alongside being a member of a youth club -with parent / guardian consent. It will not be federated to the general social web, and begin as a self-contained bubble - but with the idea of other regions creating the same thing and federating together. It would be moderated by the same volunteers / employees that run the youth clubs and social services - who are fully vetted, and follow the protocols - which already also includes moderating each other. Perhaps even somehow make it so the kids can't post on it during school hours, and after, perhaps, 10pm? There would of course be a set of standards expectations, or community codes of conduct, like here in the Fedi. Perhaps also running regular fun things too, that get kids thinking creatively (like what happens at the clubs anyway). There are of course many many issues with this idea, and I can't see it actually happening just like that. Not only is there unlikely the right fedi project to accommodate needs, but things like the online safety act potentially blocking the ability to create safe community based social networks for youth. And I'm sure there are many other issues as to why this idea might not work either. Like, what happens when someone turns 16? Are they just kicked off? However, I do know that corporate socials are bad - but not providing good safe alternatives when attempting to protect children, actually makes them more vulnerable and unsafe. We need a way to embrace them, not outcast them.#socialban #socialmedia #fediverse #activitypub #youthwork #onlinesafety

I think a lot about how we get more people like me (Gen Z, female, queer, into sports) on the Social Web.One of the things I have realised is that the perception of the Social Web to someone like me isn't all that positive. It doesn't have a good 'vibe'. In this blog post, I've explored the initial vibe of the Social Web to someone like me. I'd love if you checked it out.https://forbetter.ghost.io/whats-the-vibe-of-the-social-web/#SocialMedia #Blog #SocialWeb #Fediverse #Bluesky #Mastodon
