@Dianora
I have studded tires and my path is mostly bike path with no cars around, lucky me!@dillyd Good. I never had studded tires in uni. AFAICR studded tires were not available then. I did find using the narrow road tires did seem to cut through the snow to the bare road. I never slid out either.

(Talking to myself): "you walk to work in this weather. Why not ride? It'll be fine. You can do this. You can do this."
Husband: "sounds like you're trying to talk yourself into it."
Me: "of course. Did you see what it looks like outside?"Final result: easy peasy! Plus a sense of exhilaration and accomplishment. My first winter bike ride to work in snowy weather with snowy ground. I'm even getting used to the sensation of the tires sliding out sideways in the snow.
@dillyd Bad ass!!

You are a crazy person, and I support you fully!

@dillyd I did that many times, but I just remembered the time I made it half a block and slid down the street on my back under my bike. It was fun, no cars, soft snow over hidden ice. I think I walked my bike the rest of the way 😅

@sunumbral snow over ice is the worst. Depending on the thickness of the snow, it can be just enough to make my crampons useless.

@dillyd Good to know, this is my first winter having crampons.

@sunumbral well to be clear I'm talking about the lighter city crampons. My heavy duty hiking crampons handle any combination of snow and ice. But they're overkill for the sidewalk.

@kellyromanych
At least the commute was magical 😂
We'll see about the day in the office. So far it's pretty mundane. -
@dillyd hell yeah! I did a little winter riding this year but after falling on the ice and spraining my thumb I've kept it to days when there isn't ice on the roads. Next fall I'll probably invest in some studded tires and learn how to put them on myself so I'm not limited by ice
@trainguyrom @dillyd they're pretty easy to put on (I think tires overall improved vastly in the last 20 years... I don't have to curse nearly as much as I used to!) but with all the wheel aligning etc. I prefer to have it done by the bike shop. (I am fortunate in having a non-judgmental bike shop)
