Mozilla wants your input. Here's mine:
Mozilla should be doing two things and two things only:
1: Building THE reference implementation web browser, and
2: Being a jugular-snapping attack dog on standards committees.
3: There is no 3.Mozilla should have NOTHING to do with AI. Nobody wants it. Stop forcing AI into every corner of every project because your VC-brained management have completely lost the plot.
@jwz Mozilla is braindead at this point.

@jwz agreed, if someone wants LLM integration in their browser - let them install it as a plugin. Or just use Comet instead. Firefox should be like the kernel, everythiing else is userspace programs

@jwz Gotta love their blatant lie after submitting the form:
"Mozilla is building a movement to make sure that the internet and technology prioritizes people over profit. More than 100,000 people around the world donate to the Mozilla Foundation. Will you become a donor to Mozilla today?"
I say "hard no" until they get off the AI bandwagon; I will resume my support once that happens. I still think Mozilla of old has a very important role to play, and I have a hard time seeing who should take their place on short notice. We cannot let Google own it all, and be the only grown-up in the room. -

@jwz That survey was an exercise in asking us to please please let them do the AI.
Here's my response:"Please, if management want to suck at the teet of AI and the grifting engine, spin out the browser and email clients. Let the community safeguard those. I don't even mind if you keep the names Firefox and thunderbird. But we can't afford for AI to be permanently entwined in this browser. We have forks but we need more community governance clear of the current hype in silicon valley." 1/4

@jwz "This series of questions is you trying to get the backing of the community to go for AI. Fork the browser and start a new company if that's the case. You can't of course because folks know Firefox and Thunderbird. You're stealing past work and all of this is for that sweet sweet investment dollar at a time when the crash is nearly here." 3/4

@jwz "We don't give you our permission.
Take our no to AI as an answer.
Here's my further thoughts in a blog post.

@FediThing @jwz the guy who evangelised at me that I mentioned in the blog post by the way?
He works for Mozilla.
I really hate the way this is being pushed at the community. The communications are incredibly manipulative from the surveys to the communications.
The Mozilla Foundation is completely disconnected from its community and the organisation itself needs to be forked.
-
@FediThing I think Mozilla sees itself as a corporate silicon valley organisation.
So it's an attitude I feel is baked in.
They pretend they are a bunch of plucky rebels. But in reality they never were.
Resistance requires intersectionality and also internationality. The valley has been huffing it's own farts for a while now.
So before Mozilla pulls down it's governance repository on GitHub I suggest folks fork a copy. I don't trust Mozilla to keep it up.

@lori Well it's possibly a good reason to consider choosing the GPL and Affero Licences over more permissive licences.
For some reason there's a lot of folks who love Open Source but not the Free Software side.
Code needs to be available to everyone, to download it, inspect it, learn from it, share it.
The GPL does that just fine.
