The big point is you don't know where you're delivering, just the planet.
Once you pick a landing spot, you have a Fallout 2 style map you can roam across. Eventually, maybe you find pointers or encounters.

Various tiles on the map are marked in advance with different icons.
If you do the matching kind of research - for example, sensor scanning, interviewing survivors, researching historical records, etc - you get to see what's in that tile AND get a clue as to the nearest major signal.

So I'm running a fever and have taken quite a lot of Dayquil, but I think this sounds fun, because it means you can spend your time researching before you descend.
Everything you do has a time cost, whether it's research or movement or space travel, and that's the main cost of the game. Time.
