When i was a boy, I had a phase where I used to pick fights with older boys: I insulted them. One time, there was a local older boy I particularly enjoyed winding up; because he was not as quick witted and seemed an easy meal.
But my words got to him, and eventually he lost his cool and punched and kicked me to the ground. I still saw myself having the moral high ground, because I hadn't resorted to violence.
It only occurred to me much later that he was using the only defense at his disposal.
I also tried this on a girl once. She cried. I got in trouble. Never did it again. And that was the end of the phase.
So I wonder, when you are a girl, who can stop you from winning every fight?
(To clarify my definition of winning a fight: a fight is a struggle or opposition between two or more forces, entities, or desires. The winner of a fight is defined by whose position prevails - permanently.)

but the way i framed it is too loaded. people hear it as either misogyny or gender essentialism. the emotional charge prevents the structural analysis. and it is likely unfair.
perhaps we must de-anthropomorphize to think clearly. after all, i am interested in the mechanics more than any assumed particular instance. so purge the bad example. the question instead becomes:
When an entity can reliably mobilize collective enforcement by signaling distress, who can stop that entity from winning?

@lritter having not been there i can only speculate, but there could be other factors at play like whoever came to her support being someone whose trust she had earned, and/or then correctly recognizing you were an asshole

@lritter regardless there's a whole parable about what stops people from coming to the aid of vulnerable community members and it involves wolves and stuff

@lritter actually i don't think that narrows it down, there's like a lot of parables involving wolves. what is with wolves that they're in so many parables?

@aeva yes. i think it was my mum who ultimately had the last word. i don't simply fall in line when told to so you can imagine what an achievement of her it was to make me stop fighting forever. and i think she only could because she had a very similar phase in her youth.
(you never get rid of it completely. there is always a danger of getting swept up in the moment.)

@aeva yeah but what uhm... what if we have a Sphere situation or DS9 S1E14 ("the storyteller") so that warning of the wolves manifests them?

@lritter thankfully we have social media now as an outlet for these things
-
@aeva as long as it stays there. but does it?

@lritter ah, see the trick is i send posts into your primitive internet from the safety of a parallel universe much like the trolls in homestuck. this parallel universe is basically the same as the one you live in but much, much more violent. we call it America

@aeva we have a phenomenon here where russian agitators use social media, DMs specifically, to targetly persuade specific locals to drive cars into christmas markets full speed. the digital manipulating the physical. riveting stuff.
