@sandorspruit @MsHearthWitch @brennen 😄 Biking is so common in the Netherlands, I cannot imagine life without them. And come to think of it. Very young children learn to bike on tricycles, bikes with some extra wheels when learning to bike. Then the rest of us would bike on bicycles. And then some elderly people again get a tricycle when they want to bike but need more wheels support.
@regendans @sandorspruit @MsHearthWitch @brennen the rain can be a bit of a bother, but the real enemy is the wind. 😆

@MsHearthWitch oh dang, you're gonna have a blast! It's so much fun! You can always just dip your toes in too if you're worried about weather or what not; just because you get a bicycle doesn't mean you have to bike *every* place (but you may find that you want to)! Welcome, and enjoy!
We have #BikeNite every Friday at 4PM Pacific on here if you have questions or concerns or just want some friendly folks to chat with (post them with the #BikeNitePQ hash tag and they get added to the queue and @ascentale will pick them up and start the discussion on Friday)!

beware, it starts with that and ends with "avid cyclist"

@brennen It looks like it. The problem is I do not like The Weather.
@MsHearthWitch @brennen you can be a Person Who Bikes Places without being a Person Who Always and Only Bikes Places!
Biking when it works for you is fun and good!

Is really much, but the joy od cycling is that you create your own wind. And do the same things you do when walking: eg. time of day, bring water, stay in the shade, don’t exaggerate… it extends your reach compared to walking. Compared to a car, well… No AC, no comfy chair and smaller reach. But way cheaper and no need for the gym!@Amiek @MsHearthWitch @hermannus
I can attest to the make your own wind to cool you in the heat. The proof of that is having to stop moiving at a stop light for two minutes.
-
@MsHearthWitch totally with you on not enjoying high temperatures. My least fave weather to bike in.
As a Canuck when folks mentioned weather I immediately thought cold where you can add layers. Heat is a completely different matter.

@dingodog19 @brennen Yeah, this is something I've always understood as a general concept but have been solidifying more recently.
There was a few posts going around that were like "Oh, you would be vegan but you love eggs? Be vegan+eggs" "Oh you would love to cycle everywhere but it's not convenient for work? So drive to work and cycle on the weekends"
And it's SO important to banish perfection from our practices.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop it's amazing what having a single bubble outside the Corpo-shere does to a motherfucker, honestly. Fedi has done some very similar things for me.

@the5thColumnist @kimu Yeah cold and rain I can easily deal with. I grew up in Northern BC, "The cold doesn't bother me anyways..."
But the heat is an active danger for me (I get actual heat stroke with all the fun side effects just from doing too much inside). So all the "just dress for the weather!" folks in my mentions can get bent lmao

@daedalouseros Yeah I mean I was definitely already on this path beforehand. Mastodon has just been a great amplifier for the things that already were important to me.

@airikr @hermannus Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said I struggle with The Weather. The last few summers have been blindingly hot WITH 90% and higher humidity for days on end. I can barely function in my house with AC, I cannot imagine biking.
@MsHearthWitch @hermannus Yeah, the climate is no joke during the summer season 😕 I don't have any AC (yet) and my apartment tend to get quite hot (around 23 C, normally around 19 C). Thankfully, I have a ceiling fan 😅

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop honestly, looking at how many people still chose bsky over fedi with the most flimsy-ass excuses possible, I feel like the only people who actually make it over here are the people who are sick of the corpo-sphere.
Mind you, I'm not saying everyone who uses bsky is simply doing so with flimsy excuses, just that there's a lot of people who did. -

@MsHearthWitch I became that person too! you can do it!
(and screw the haters. I’m not exactly coordinated enough for a normal bike, so went w/trike... it's stunning to see who supports ya and who doesn’t) -

@MsHearthWitch I believe the bylaws state that it can only be a handmade recumbent bike ... but sure.

It fucking rocked. (Until we got hit by a car, anyway.) Screw the haters!

@IceWolf @MsHearthWitch I didn't have the stamina either, but I built it up quickly. Electric would def be handy if it was a super regular thing for me but currently it's not. (it is for my mate now tho)
