π¨ ID checks to get online could become the new norm π¨

@anomalocarididae @openrightsgroup and now the state of California has decided to start down this road with their requirements of operating systems to have an age attestation mechanism touching every conceivable piece of software.
Imagine this, I need to search the Apt repository for dumb-app, but I need to verify my age! So, curl, ls, less, more, wc plus thousands of little binaries in a Unix like system.
Governor Newsom is trash.
@csgraves @anomalocarididae @openrightsgroup assuming they don't just deadass make ""sideloading"" illegal, i wouldn't be surprised if software compilations and software distribution sets & offline/local-community repositories become more of a thing over time again

This is no longer about banning under-16s from social media.
Itβs about control over all information and forcing adults to go through digital ID checks to access the Internet.
Forcing us to submit our identity or biometric data to an array of different providers poses significant privacy risks.

A new amendment would give the UK government sweeping powers to block access to lawful information and communications.
That's unless we submit our identification to a bounty of providers.
Tell your MP to stop this broad and repressive law β¬οΈ

What about Epstein networks with all the information in clear available and people identified which would deserve more scrutiny and effort?
Show us how real you are about protecting children.

New powers would let Ministers pick and choose what should be restricted, as well as impose curfews on access.
All without having to prove sites are harmful for children.
They donβt just cover social media, but all 'Internet servicesβ β blogs, websites, online games and more.
This is overreach.

@openrightsgroup I think this is social mediaβs backlash against being held accountable for the devastating effect. Social media has on young people and it actually has a bad effect on adults too. But they pretend itβs about caring about children. Thatβs what sickens me. How they do everything but solve the problem.

@csgraves @anomalocarididae @openrightsgroup It's scary to think they might submit badly-written PRs implementing their policies. And they probably won't take the time to use the w3c's "DID"s properly:

@openrightsgroup so now they are siding with the pedophiles, as mandating ID checks just helps them distinguish children from adults. They will know exactly who to target.

Correct. It's not the adults that hang out with adults on adult sites that is the problem. It's the adults that pretend to be children hanging out with children on universal sites and services that are the dangers.

All adults would have to do a digital ID check to establish their age with third-parties so they can access any service.
If you don't, you could face blocks or time restricted curfews.
These powers could be used by any government in the UK to restrict access to almost any online service you could imagine.

One fundamental issue with that suggested schema is that it completely breaks down if one normalizes peer-to-peer interactions, in which case there is no service.
They're so hierarchical authoritarian-brained that they cannot even conceive of this.
