@kgw she's funnier than you probably expect, though it's frightfully dry/British wit. Pride and Prejudice is probably the one to read, if you might only read one.

If I may add: get the Penguin Classics edition with the foreword by Vivien Jones. It adds a lot of context and explains little weird references in the text (through footnotes).
All that extra information added to my enjoyment of the novel.
