@bisonrimant have you ever seen a Japanese tanuki (raccoon dog) carving?
Some of them can be quite well⦠endowed
Tricksters and shape shifters. The Studio Ghibli movie Pom Poko is a great environmental statement using tanuki (and great music from Shang Shang Typhoon)

also, we don't really know anything about woodcarving, but the craftsmanship looks really solid too
(are they made from one solid piece of wood or are the tails glued in?) -
