In the UK we call distance "distance". I've always understood mileage to be about "miles per gallon" or metaphorically how far something *can* go, not just how far something is from something else.

But all our road signs are still in miles so it's not like we've completely got rid of the insane units.

@futurebird Dutch here. We have a word “kilometerstand” where “stand” roughly translate to current measurement.

When describing a car, we also say “it’s got x kilometer on the counter” (where counter is the instrument that measures total distance travelled). This is usually in a sales context.

@futurebird Everyone I know in Canada calls it mileage. But we measure it empirically with litres per 100km. So not only are the units different, so is the construction. This works extremely well, we have yet to lose a moon shot by getting the mileage units wrong.

@futurebird in new zealand (metric conversion happened 1969-1976) we still call the fuel efficiency or lifetime distance travelled of a car "mileage" but we measure it in litres/100km or km

@ehproque @futurebird There is, indeed, a “kilometraje” in Spanish, but its meaning is not equivalent to mileage. It's just used to report the length of a travel.

@futurebird Hmm… For the three definitions of “mileage” in en.wikipedia.org, in German:

Distance traveled in the life time of a car: Tachostand (tachograph status).
Distance traveled from a point: Zurückgelegte Strecke (traveled distance).
Fuel economy: Spritverbrauch (fuel usage), measured in litre/100km.
Business mileage reimbursement rate: No such thing, afaik.

@futurebird age is a romanic suffix, I think. That’s why we don’t have a simple word like that in germanic languages. Despite the meme, there isn’t a word for everything in German. I’d even say the opposite is true; if you don’t count compounds as separate words, our daily vocabulary is probably smaller than English.

@raganwald @futurebird There *was* an attempt to metricize the word to “klickage”, but It fell out of use pretty quickly.

I’m still baffled by car ratings that give the mileage for EVs in “miles per gallon equivalent” (e.g. the Nissan Ariya is rated overall at 87 mpge). I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with that. Maybe it's aimed at people coming over from gas-powered cars.

Polish uses "zasięg" (range, literally "reach"), "zużycie" ("consumption", kWh/100km) and "przebieg" (number of kilometres driven, literally "ran through").
